Imperial Teen Return With New Single, "Overdrive"

Imperial Teen is back with “Overdrive,” the fizzing lead single from their upcoming seventh studio album, All Over You, arriving October 9 on Merge Records. The song comes paired with a self-directed music video, and it moves like the band caught it on their way out the door, because they nearly did.

Written during a late-night writing session in Provincetown, “Overdrive” packs urgency, wit, and a snap of guitar into a compact package. Vocalist and guitarist Will Schwartz recorded his vocal take in what bandmate Roddy Bottum recalls as a “magical” last-minute session, cut before Schwartz had to catch a ferry. The song also folds in a nod to the Sex Pistols, tucked into an otherwise pop-forward arrangement, along with what the band calls the album’s only reference to the internet.

All Over You marks a return for the four-piece: Bottum (guitars, keyboards, vocals), Schwartz, bassist and vocalist Jone Stebbins, and drummer and vocalist Lynn Truell. The band members live in different cities and work in bursts, gathering for writing retreats and then reconvening for scattered recording sessions. “We live great distances away from each other, so initially, we get together to collaborate, write, and create,” Stebbins says. “When we have enough material, we reconvene to record. Both scenarios, creating and recording, take multiple trips, sometimes with big lapses of time in between due to our various schedules.”

That start-and-stop process shows up in the material, too. Truell describes her own contribution to the title track as a return to a punk instinct: “I just went back to punk, to that feeling of prowling around looking for anything to do and being so mad about how boring everything is that you just have to yell.” It’s the kind of detail that explains why the band’s records tend to sound purposeful even when they’re built in pieces.

SPIN has called the band’s music “as fresh and vital as ever,” and PopMatters, the long-running music and culture site, has praised the group as “masters of catchy hooks.” “Overdrive” makes a case for both holding up.

The band is easing back into performing too, with a short run of shows alongside The Breeders in San Francisco ahead of a headline tour stretching across both coasts this fall. For now, “Overdrive” stands on its own as a preview of where Imperial Teen has landed after years apart, still writing songs built around urgency and hooks.
