BALTHVS have a new single out, and it comes with a clear signal of where their attention has been lately. “Motion (For Ashra)” interpolates “Oasis,” a piece by Kosmische Musik guitarist Manuel Göttsching from his Ashra project, a reference point that says as much about the Bogotá trio’s listening habits as it does about their own sound.
“Motion (For Ashra)” takes its starting point from Göttsching’s “Oasis” and works it into something else entirely, described by the band as an effort to rework the tune “while preserving the wonderful melodies of the late German composer.” It’s a specific enough reference that it’s worth knowing before hearing the track: the shape of Göttsching’s original is there, even as BALTHVS pulls it into their own register.
BALTHVS is Balthazar Aguirre, Johanna Mercuriana, and Santiago Lizcano, a trio built on genre fluid instincts that pull from funk, dub, surf, cumbia, Middle Eastern melody, and spiritual jazz without settling into any one of them for long. “Motion (For Ashra)” is the clearest example yet of how far that reach extends, this time back to a specific, decades old touchstone in German electronic music.
