As we mentioned last week, Soundtoys is giving away a free plug-in called Little PrimalTap. Inspired by the classic Prime Time digital delay, Little PrimalTap captures the highly distinctive sonic imprint of this quirky, character-heavy creative tool. Use the few simple controls with reckless abandon to echo, loop, warp, distort, mangle, or create cacophonous cascades of otherworldly sounds. Soundtoys just released this video today to show some unusual directions it can go.
Soundtoys traces back to Wave Mechanics, founded in the mid-1990s by Ken Bogdanowicz and Bob Belcher, both formerly of Eventide, where they worked on hardware like the H3000. The company has built its catalog around effects that lean into color and character rather than clean, transparent processing, among them EchoBoy, Decapitator, and Little AlterBoy. Giving away scaled-down “Little” versions of its plugins is a familiar move for Soundtoys: it lets players sample the sound of a tool before deciding whether the full version earns a spot in their sessions, and it has previously served as a preview for plugins that later shipped in full, as PrimalTap itself did.
The full version of PrimalTap expands considerably on the free plugin, adding a second delay tap, six routing algorithms, and deeper freeze and modulation options for anyone who wants to push further than Little PrimalTap allows.
