Los Angeles alt-rock trio Out In Front have released “Medicine,” a new single and music video out now via AWAL.
Vocalist and primary songwriter Madie Renner, drummer Isaiah Volk, and bassist Ryen Wagner met while working as tennis coaches at a local country club. Isaiah, a former Division 1 tennis player, had been looking for a way to bring music to the front of his life. He and Renner set up a few jam sessions with their coworker Ryen, Isaiah’s former college teammate, and the chemistry was immediate. Out In Front came together shortly after, building a sound that blends guitars, dynamic drums and emotionally direct vocals while holding onto its Southern California roots.
“Medicine” came together fast, in the days after Renner forgot her father’s birthday while on tour. “It came together really fast, in three hours, one of the fastest songs we’ve ever made,” Renner says. “It poured out of me after forgetting my dad’s birthday on tour and feeling so terrible. It was a reality check moment that punched me in the gut.” The band felt the project needed a bass-driven track, so Wagner brought in a groovy, nostalgic riff that became the song’s foundation, working with producer Joel Ferber to shape it. Renner describes the song as a reminder to be present: “‘Medicine’ is about longing for the simplicity of childhood, when life felt lighter, happiness came naturally, and the world didn’t feel so heavy. It’s a reminder to look up and not let life’s pace steal the joy that’s right in front of us.”
The accompanying music video, co-directed by Noa Volk and the band, looks at what touring actually feels like for a band still finding its footing. “The ‘Medicine’ music video shows what tour is really like for an up and coming band,” Volk says. “Missing home, friends moving on, and wondering if you’re doing the right thing are side effects of pursuing what you’re meant to do. Chasing a dream is really hard out on the road, but doing it with your family and best friends makes it so much easier. ‘Medicine’ embodies just that.”
Out In Front has built a following the DIY way, racking up millions of streams, including several million on the fan favorite single “fLoAT.” The band has opened for Yellowcard, The All-American Rejects, Sublime, AJR, Wet Leg and others, and recently signed with Sony/AWAL. This fall, they head out across North America in support of alt-pop artist Charlotte Sands.
