Making Noise: Mouth Ulcers

London quartet Mouth Ulcers release Silent Pictures today, a debut EP rooted in post-punk, atmospheric rock, and gothic influences. Built around melodic bass lines, angular guitars, and reverb-soaked textures, the seven-track release recalls artists such as Joy Division, The Cure, and Bauhaus while still leaving room for the band to establish its own identity.

Formed in 2025 by vocalist and guitarist Zak Watson, alongside Josephine Rose, Jamie-Lee Culver, and David Zbirka, Mouth Ulcers quickly evolved from a studio project into a live band. While those influences are easy to hear, Silent Pictures balances dark moods with memorable melodies, creating a debut that feels familiar without simply revisiting the past.

Early singles from Silent Pictures earned attention from The Line of Best Fit, Rolling Stone UK, and Louder Than War, while also receiving airplay from BBC Radio 6 Music, BBC Radio 1, KEXP, and Radio X. That momentum has helped introduce Mouth Ulcers to a wider audience ahead of the EP’s release.

According to the band, Silent Pictures explores themes of nostalgia, emotional suppression, vulnerability, and obsession. Rather than following a single concept, each song developed through its own writing and recording process before coming together as a cohesive collection.

The video for “Silent Pictures” provides a strong introduction to both the band’s sound and visual identity. With the EP now available and festival appearances scheduled throughout the summer, Mouth Ulcers are a band we’ll be following with interest.
