The Tontons – SXSW Artist Interview

The Tontons are a 4 piece indie rock act from Houston, TX that blends multiple genres into a sound that’d difficult to define, but makes sense to ears. Call it a combination of R&B, Psych Rock, Jazz, Shoegaze and Soul. The band includes Asli Omar on vocals, Justin Martinez plays drums, Adam Martinez on guitar, and Tom Nguyen plays the bass.

As a lead-up to South by Southwest, The Noise Room is talking to bands and artists performing at SXSW. Here’s what The Tontons had to say:

What do like most about playing at SXSW?

SXSW is fun!  Its unlike any other festival we’ve been to.  So much energy in the city, but what I like most is seeing some of the other bands that are playing.

Are you out promoting anything?

We just released a new record in February called “Make Out King and Other Stories of Love”.  We want you to hear it.

Are there any bands or musicians that you are looking forward to checking out?

Not quite sure as of yet.  We haven’t had time to check who is playing.  I usually go and try to check out the international bands.

What are the challenges for you or your band when playing at SXSW?

Its the amount of shows and the traveling from venue to venue that is the hardest. Its almost impossible to drive, so you end up walking with your gear all over Austin.

Do you have any survival tips for those attending SXSW?

Wristbands let you use pretty much any bathroom and which is a huge lifesaver.

Are you more “stick around, check out music and enjoy the scene” or “play as many shows as possible then get out”?

A perfect combination of both.  This is our 5th SXSW appearance and you learn to balance the experience.

What are your SXSW Show Times?

3/12 – 2:55pm – Big Picture Media Party @ Thirsty Nickel
3/14 – 1pm – SX San Jose @ The San Jose Hotel
3/14 – 3pm – The Chive Party @ Trinity Hall
3/15 – 12am (midnight) – The Convoy Group + Clean Bill Mgmt Official SXSW Showcase @ Dirty Dog Bar
