Mothercoat – SXSW Artist Interview

Mothercoat’s latest album Allergies mixed by Fernando Lodeiro (Vampire Weekend, Paul McCartney, Franz Ferdinand, The Arctic Monkeys) and mastered by Oscar Zambrano at Zampole Studio came out on August 1st, 2012 from their own label ‘bonjin_records’ founded in 2010. The band has developed a cult following across the UK, America, and Canada where they have toured extensively and played several showcase gigs at South by Southewest and the Rockness Festival. Starting in 2012 Mothercoat set its home-base in Fukaya-City, Japan with a private studio and a vegetable field to devote itself to music even more. In regular demand at big venues across Japan, they are quirky, innovative, and exhilarating. If you haven’t already seen them, you undoubtedly should.

As a lead-up to South by Southwest, The Noise Room is talking to bands and artists performing at SXSW. If you’ll be playing at SXSW and want to be interviewed, please contact us. Here’s what Mothercoat had to say:

What do like most about playing at SXSW?

It could give us encounters to people who we should meet there.

Are you out promoting anything?

We have just released our new EP ‘5 – 1 + 1 =’ on February 14th. A song named ‘trickster’ from this EP was selected as one of six must-listen new tracks from around the world on The Guardian. These CDs are a limited edition of 511 pieces from the title of the EP, so we strongly recommend you to get it A.S.A.P. before it is sold out. More info at mothercoat.bandcamp.com

Are there any bands or musicians that you are looking forward to checking out?

What are the challenges for you or your band when playing at SXSW?

As an international artist, it’s too expensive for us to carry our own backlines into the showcase so it’s going to be challenges if we could make the sound we desire there and then.

Do you have any survival tips for those attending SXSW?

Not sure if it could be a ‘tip’ but staying cool and absurd at a time and trying your best to bring as many people as possible to your showcase.

Are you more “stick around, check out music and enjoy the scene” or “play as many shows as possible then get out”?

No doubt the more shows, the better but we hope the working VISA acquisition is much more affordable.

What are your SXSW Show Times?

International Day Stage at Austin Convention Center, March 12th (Time to be announced)
Elysium on Friday, March 14 from 01:00 AM to 01:50 AM

Is there anything you’d like to add?

JapanNite will be very crowded with the audience who would be there because it’s a JapanNite, but please don’t give up to get in to see us since we will play at the end of the showcase, late time like 1AM so there would be a chance for comings and goings.
