The Jungle Giants – Interview

We’re 3 guys and a girl from Brisbane, Australia, who dabble in music when we’re done training for our burgeoning ping-pong careers. When the four of us get around to playing music together, Sam sings and plays guitar, Cesira shreds lead guitar, Keelan drums and I play bass. The result is usually a high-energy, indie-rock sounding sweat pit.

As a lead-up to South by Southwest, The Noise Room is talking to bands and artists performing at SXSW. Here’s what The Jungle Giants had to say:

What do like most about playing at SXSW?

Way down here in Australia, it’s pretty hard to get anywhere without selling off your limbs on the black market. So for us, the opportunity to play overseas, and in America especially – a place where a lot of bands we admire are from – means a lot.

Are you out promoting anything?

We released our debut album on August 30th last year and have been touring in support of it over the last couple months.

Are there any bands or musicians that you are looking forward to checking out?

I actually find the lineup impenetrable. There’s so many acts every time I look there’s something different that I want to see. I’ve been recommended to go see a bunch of brass and jazz bands. I think I’ll just follow my ears.

What are the challenges for you or your band when playing at SXSW?

I think for us overcoming jet lag and economizing our movements on confined stages will be the biggest add-on challenges to the usual. Nothing a beer can’t fix.

Do you have any survival tips for those attending SXSW?

Like every festival that goes over one day, try to drink a bunch of water while your drinking, if you’re not a coffee drinker, become one, and there’s never too high a price for good food when you need it.

Are you more “stick around, check out music and enjoy the scene” or “play as many shows as possible then get out”?

Probably option a. Being our first International trip as a band, we’re really wanting to take it all in and savor every moment.
