Railcard have shared the video for “Unstable Neighbour,” the latest single from their debut album, Two Steps At A Time.
Railcard came together after Rachel Love, Ian Button, and Peter Momtchiloff met at a gig and realized they were exactly the same age. Love sang and played guitar in Dolly Mixture; Momtchiloff was a member of Heavenly. The shared history and overlapping record collections were reason enough to start a band, and the group moved quickly once it formed, writing, recording, and releasing songs while they were still fresh. The band later added a fourth member, Allison Thomson, whose trumpet and keyboard work round out the group’s sound and give the songs, mostly co-written and often co-sung by Love and Button, room to stretch.
“Unstable Neighbour” is one of twelve tracks on Two Steps At A Time, out via Skep Wax and Slumberland. The album ranges from delicate, Bacharach-leaning pop to raucous, garage-adjacent duets, and the band has described “Unstable Neighbour” itself as somewhere between Stereolab and “an indiepop Hawkwind.” Allan Crockford, who mixed the band’s earlier EPs, returned to mix the album.
Those earlier EPs point to how fast Railcard have worked. Three digital EPs arrived first, later compiled onto a mail-order CD that sold out quickly enough to catch the band and its labels off guard. New copies are being made available alongside the album release. Railcard made their live debut with Thomson already in the lineup, and the group has continued playing UK dates since.
