Walrus Audio has introduced Canvas Expression, a pedal built to replace the mechanical guts of a traditional expression pedal with something that doesn’t wear out. Where most expression pedals rely on a potentiometer, string, or gear track to translate foot movement into a signal, Canvas Expression uses a contactless magnetic position sensor instead, building on the same underlying technology behind Canvas Volume, a magnetic sensor design that also shapes the granular textures on the company’s Lüm Texture Engine reverb pedal.
The result is a pedal aimed less at doing one job well and more at doing several jobs at once. Canvas Expression can control compatible gear through expression, MIDI, USB-C, or CV, which puts it equally at home on a pedalboard, alongside a synthesizer, or plugged into a computer-based rig. Players can send expression and MIDI signals to multiple devices simultaneously, so a single sweep of the pedal can, for example, shape a parameter on a pedalboard while also sending a corresponding MIDI CC message somewhere else in the signal chain.
Most of that flexibility is configured through the Canvas Expression web editor, where players can set tapers, wiring, MIDI CC and PC assignments, CV settings, and switch behavior to match whatever setup they’re plugging it into. The pedal itself carries multiple analog 1/4 inch connections for expression, CV, and switch signals, along with selectable tapers and configurable outputs, all housed in a steel and aluminum build.
The pitch behind the magnetic sensor is longevity as much as feel. Conventional designs built around potentiometers or mechanical gear tracks tend to develop scratchiness or inconsistent sweep as they wear. Because Canvas Expression has no strings, gears, or potentiometers in the signal path, Walrus Audio is positioning it as a pedal that should behave the same after years of use as it did on day one, without a mechanical part to stretch, slip, or wear out.
